Solomon and Gaenor

MPAA rating: R for sexuality and a scene of violence

The Reel Deal rating:
Review by Rick Romancito

The year is 1911. The place, a rough Welsh mining town. The plot, a kind of "Romeo and Juliet" tale of young love amid strict Jewish tradition.

In British director Paul Morrison's feature, Solomon (Ioan Guffudd) strains against the conventions of his orthodox family. Smooth-talking, handsome and intelligent, he cannot reconcile his immigrant roots. When he meets lovely young Gaenor (Nia Roberts), the sparks fly, but could it be because she thinks he's a Gentile? Their romance faces hard challenges as it blossoms in the midst of strikes and escalating anti-Semitic activity.

A strong supporting cast and superb direction elevate this film above most.
