Review by Rick Romancito
This so-called liberating gay-themed film shows its roots in television by adopting the same sort of plaintive exposition that has made that genre so easily lampooned. Features a cast of mostly male characters in a typical melodrama about how hard it is to find happiness.
Story centers on a group of friends - not necessarily involved with one another - who enjoy gathering at a diner run by a mother hen (John Mahoney) who's seen it all. Written and directed by Greg Berlanti, co-executive producer of TV's "Dawson's Creek," this film doesn't give in to the stereotype of depicting rampant promiscuity but rather shows how relationships are more important to the members of the Broken Hearts Club.
"What we're trying to do with the film is present a group of friends that are not that different than you'd imagine a group of straight men to be," Berlanti said in a promotional Web site. "There has never been a film about gay men that was conventional, that just happened to be peeking in on their lives for this set period of time."
